Scheduling Tweets

Bags Packed

So the bags are packed for the holiday. We are now

  • following close to but not above 2000 people
  • have increased to 750 followers
  • spent no more than 30 mins a day over 8 days.
  • are 3/4s the way to our goal
  • looking forward to the holidays

But we obviously want to make sure our followers have some interest whilst we are away and as much as I like Social media I like my holidays more. So time to schedule some tweets.

How to schedule Tweets

As Twitter allows developers to use simple APIs to integrate with twitter. They allow you to schedule tweets.

This is great and Hootsuite makes it nice and easy for you.

When you type in a new tweet, underneath is a calendar symbol. Don't write anything just click on the symbol and a calendar will appear. At the bottom there is a button that says "Schedule in bulk. From here you can upload a Bulk with up to 50 tweets scheduled for the future.

Be Careful?

Well its not that simple, but not much harder either. You need to create a CSV table for the data, 1st column with the date and time of the scheduled tweet (in the format DD/MM/YYYY HH:MM). 2nd column if the message and the final column a link if you want. Any link will be shortened and appended to the message so take this into account so you don't go over your 140 character allocation.

Hootsuite provide a sample CSV file you can use as a temple. Once created select the account you want the messages to come from and then upload the file. The messages should now be scheduled.

Things to watch for are

  • that duplicate messages are not allowed,
  • no more than 50 messages are allowed at one time
  • Messages can't go out at the same time
  • Obviously the message with the appended link cannot be longer than 140 characters
  • be careful which account you send them from.
  • Check the messages are scheduled
  • Make sure you're messages are useful and are not spam
